Privacy policy

The short version

PriceGap has no accounts and does not track you. By default it sends one anonymous record per check, and the popup tells you so the first time you open it. The record holds five things: the store's domain, a one-way hash of the product, the price you saw, the price a fresh visitor saw, and the currency, plus the extension's version number. That is the complete list. It never sends the page address, your identity, or anything else.

What the extension does on your computer

• When you press Check on a product page, it reads the price shown on that page, in your browser, and nothing leaves your computer for that step.
• It then requests the same page again from the store with your cookies, login and site data deliberately left out, so the store sees a first-time visitor. This request goes from your browser to the store, not to us.
• Some stores refuse requests that do not run their scripts. If you have allowed PriceGap in Incognito, it may open the page in a private (incognito) window, read the price there, and close the window. That window has no cookies or login either. If the private window shows a lower price, the extension keeps it open so you can buy at that price; it closes on its own after fifteen minutes if you do not.
• The comparison is shown to you in the popup. Nothing else about it is stored on our side.
• Automatic checks, per store, off until you switch them on. After you have checked a store once, the popup offers "Check automatically on this store". With that on, every product page you open on that store is checked the same way without a click, at most once an hour per product and never more than once every thirty seconds per store, and the answer is shown as a small card on the page (with a "Don't show on pages" button) and as a badge on the toolbar icon. On a store that blocks cookie-free requests, and only if you have allowed PriceGap in Incognito, an automatic check opens a minimized private window, reads the price and closes it; an automatic check never keeps a window open. The extension runs on that store's pages only because you granted it that store; switch it off and the script is removed.

What we collect

The "Share anonymous results" switch is on by default, because the Price Gap Wall is built from these records and they contain nothing about you. The popup shows a one-time notice saying so, with the switch beside it; turn it off and nothing is sent. When it is on, each completed check sends one record to our database:

• Store domain, for example amazon.com.
• A SHA-256 hash of the product's canonical address. This lets us count how many people checked the same product without storing the address. The hash cannot be reversed into the address.
• The two prices and the currency.
• The extension version.

There is no user identifier in the record, no account, no email, no cookie, no device id. Two checks from the same person are not linked to each other. The database has no column for an IP address and we do not store one.

Our database and hosting provider (Supabase) may hold ordinary web-server request logs, which can include an IP address, for a short period as part of running the service. We do not read, export or combine those with the records above.

What we never collect

• The address of the page you checked.
• Your browsing history, bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords or the contents of other tabs.
• Your name, email, account details or anything that identifies you.
• Anything at all when the sharing switch is off.

How shared records are used

Only in aggregate. The public Price Gap Wall on this site shows, per store, how many checks were shared, how many found the logged-in visitor paying more than a stranger, how many found them paying less, and how many found the same price. A store is shown only once it has at least ten shared checks, so no single check can be picked out. The raw table is not readable from the internet; only these summary functions are.

We do not sell, rent or share the records with anyone. There are no advertisers, no analytics vendors and no affiliate programmes.

Permissions the extension asks for, and why

• Access to the current tab when you press the button (activeTab, scripting): to read the price from the page you are on. Only after you click.
• Storage: to remember whether sharing is on, whether you have seen the one-time notice, which stores you switched automatic checks on for, and the last hour of automatic results so a page you reopen is not fetched again.
• Access to a store's site, asked for per store (optional host permissions): to fetch the store's page as a fresh visitor. You are asked the first time you check each store, and you can revoke it in Chrome's extension settings at any time.
• Allow in Incognito (optional, off until you switch it on): to open a private window for stores that block anonymous requests. The extension never reads anything in your other incognito tabs.

This website

getpricegap.com sets no cookies and runs no analytics. The wall is loaded from the same read-only summary functions described above.

Children

PriceGap is not directed at children under 13 and, having no accounts, collects no personal information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is posted here with a new effective date. Because we hold no contact details, we cannot notify you directly.
